Spiny katydid (Sasima sp.), juvenile ♀ Spiny helmeted katydid (Sasima sp.) from the rainforest of southern New Guinea. The bristly armaments on this juvenile specimen serve not only to deter predators, but also to disguise the insect in the mossy forest understory. Helmet katydids (Phyllophorinae) comprise some of the world's largest species. Digul River, Papua, Indonesia (New Guinea).

There are so many of these around at this time of year, the woods and fields are thick with these hunters....personable too, with their forward facing eyes, they appear to have a relationship with you. They do, of course, both the spider and you just can't figure out what it is. ...
