The history of the Primate's Palace, which today houses Hotel Bellotto, is turbulent, full of ups and downs. Its construction began at the end of the 16th century on the initiative of the bishop of Płock, Wojciech Baranowski. When the bishop became the primate, the Palace was handed over to the Gniezno Chapter in 1610. Unfortunately, during the Swedish invasion of 1655-1660, the Palace was destroyed. The reconstruction was carried out by Józef Fontana, who had a penchant for baroque classicism.
