I loved the rose without thorns,
I saw a white rose without thorns,
Pressed it to my breast as ornament,
Alas, it had no perfume,
My heart was torn asunder:

I saw a red rose covered with thorns,
Woe is me, it pierced my hand,
Blood flowed from the rose evermore,
Its powerful scent consumed my senses:
